How to prepare a packing list for RAGBRAI

Getting ready for RAGBRAI is both thrilling and meticulous, and trust me, preparation is key. When I first joined this week-long cycling expedition across Iowa, my packing list was all over the place. With over 10,000 cyclists participating annually, it’s essential to be prepared. So, let me guide you through what you need to pack.

Start with the basics: your bike and safety gear. A well-maintained bike is crucial; make sure to get a thorough tune-up at least 2 weeks before the event. This includes checking the tire pressure, braking system, and chain condition. Don’t forget to pack a helmet—preferably a ventilated one since temperatures can hit 85°F in July.

Speaking of temperatures, Iowa summers can be unpredictable. On my first ride, it was sunny one moment and storming the next. Bring a lightweight, waterproof jacket that can easily fit into your pannier. Additionally, pack three pairs of cycling shorts. A high-quality pair of padded shorts reduces friction and can make a 50-mile stretch much more bearable.

In terms of nutrition, plan to carry high-energy snacks. Items like energy bars, gels, and electrolyte tablets can be lifesavers. During RAGBRAI, riders can burn up to 4,000 calories a day. Hydration is just as critical; bring a water bottle with at least a 20oz capacity and consider a hydration pack for those long stretches between towns.

Garmin Edge or Wahoo ELEMNT? That’s up to you, but a GPS cycling computer makes navigation seamless. This year, course maps were available for download with turn-by-turn instructions. Without this device, keeping on track can be challenging.

Your evenings will likely be spent in tents, so invest in a good-quality sleeping bag with a comfort rating of at least 30°F. Despite warm days, nights can be unexpectedly cool. Don’t skimp on comfort here; a sleeping pad with an R-value of 3 or higher can make a world of difference.

Consider hygiene. Include items like wet wipes, biodegradable soap, and a small towel. Portable showers are available, but lines can be long. Pro tip: flip-flops protect your feet from communal bathroom floors. And let’s face it, after 60 miles on your bike, a quick rinse can be rejuvenating.

First aid is another must. You’ll want a basic kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers. Blisters and minor scrapes are not uncommon. Including a tube of “chamois cream” can prevent saddle sores and is one of those items you’ll be glad you have after the first day.

Engage in preventive maintenance. Carry a small tool kit with tire levers, a multi-tool, and a spare tube. On my second RAGBRAI, a fellow cyclist had three flats in one day. These tools saved him a lot of headaches. And don’t forget a mini pump or CO2 inflator for quick fixes.

Electrical outlets can be rare, so pack a power bank with at least a 10,000mAh capacity. This keeps your phone and other electronics charged, especially useful for checking the RAGBRAI app for updates and route changes. Detours happen, and being caught off-guard isn’t fun.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable. With reflective tarmac and long hours under the sun, SPF 50 or higher is necessary. Pair that with UV-protective sunglasses to keep your eyes safe from glare and flying debris. The combination of these two items makes the ride much more comfortable.

A small bag for your documents, cash, and identification should be waterproof. Weather changes swiftly, and the last thing you want is soggy money or ruined IDs. Ziploc bags can serve in a pinch, but dedicated waterproof pouches are more reliable.

Do you plan to document your journey? Camera gear, whether it’s a GoPro or just your smartphone, should be on your list. Ensure it’s easily accessible for those spontaneous photo opportunities. I captured some incredible sunsets that would have otherwise been missed.

This packing list might seem exhaustive, but thorough preparation significantly enhances your RAGBRAI experience. Each item plays a role, from ensuring your safety to maximizing comfort. The excitement of the ride, the diverse scenery, and the camaraderie among riders all contribute to an unforgettable journey.
